Mayamalavagowlai is the 15th Melakarta ragam and is the first ragam that any student of music learns in the Carnatic system. This is a very intense ragam and has been used by film music composers to depict various emotions. From Viswanathan-Ramamoorthy using it in "Kallellaam maanikka" song in Aalayamani to A R Rahman using it in "Sollayo Solaikili" in the movie Alli Arjuna, this ragam has been used by one and all. But none has used this ragam as prolifically as 'isaignani' Ilaiyaraaja who must have given at least 50 hit numbers in this ragam.
