Ragam Vaasanthi in Tamil Film Music

Updated: Feb 15

Ragam Vaasanthi, also known as Bhoopeshwari, is a modern ragam in Carnatic Music that has a few beautiful compositions. However, the raga has been handled in many Tamil Film Songs proficiently by many Music Directors.

Of all the Music Directors that have used Ragam Vaasanthi in film songs, Ilayaraja has been the most prolific.

Vaasanthi mimics ragam Mohanam except in the usage of Shudh Dhaivatham as opposed to Mohanam's Chaturshruti Daivatham. This one note change alters the entire mood of the raga.

Most songs that use Ragam Vaasanthi have mixed it up with Anya swaras to suit the mood of the song and it is quite rare to find a purely Vaasanthi based song.

Carnatic compositions in Vaasanthi are:

1. Thillana by Shri Lalgudi G Jayaraman (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o4cuudrx2HI)

2. Mayil Meedhu Vilayaadum by Sathur Karpagam (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=srVj0Nh4iNc)

Popular movie songs in Ragam Vaasanthi are:

1. Kurukku Siruththavale - Mudhalvan

2. Adho Mega Oorvalam - Eeramaana Rojaave

3. Kaadhalin Deepam Ondru - Thambikku Endha Ooru (with Charukesi touches in Charanam)

4. Paruvame Pudhiya Pandal - Nenjaththai Killaadhey (with D2 also peppered in with Vaasanthi's D1)

5. Anbu Nadamaadum - Avanthan Manidhan (with Valaji in the Charanam) and a few more...
