Aptly named Kalaivani at birth, Vani Jairam was a playback singer that took the nation by storm with her first song and then went on to captivate the audience for 5 decades.
Vani Jairam hailed from Chennai and studied at the Queen Mary's College and later moved to Mumbai when she got married to Jairam. Although her musical training was in Carnatic classical, her husband encouraged her to learn Hindustani classical and Bhajans. It was him that spotted her talent and encouraged her to seek opportunities in playback singing. She met Vasant Desai, the Music Director for Guddi, and the rest, as they say, is history. Bole re Papi hara set to the Raag Miyaan ki Malhaar still reverberates in our ears sweetly.

Vani Jairam later reprised her first song by singing "En ullam azhagaana" for Shankar-Ganesh in the movie Cinema Paithiyam which was a remake of Guddi.
